Traveling with children can be an adventure in itself, but when you have four little ones in tow, it can feel a bit overwhelming. As a mom of four—Oliver (5), Lincoln (3), Theodore (2), and Maverick (7 months)—I’ve learned a few tips and tricks to make our journeys smoother and more enjoyable. From keeping them entertained to staying organized, here’s how we make family travel a little less chaotic and a lot more fun!

1. Pack Smart with Entertainment

When it comes to keeping the kids entertained, preparation is key. Here are some of my go-to items:

  • iPads: Loaded with movies, games, and educational apps, iPads are lifesavers during long flights or car rides. I make sure to download content ahead of time and bring headphones for a quieter experience. Don’t forget a protective case for those inevitable drops!

  • Crayons and Coloring Books: Nothing beats the classic coloring book and crayon combo. I pack a small art kit for each child, complete with a mini sketchbook, crayons, and a few stickers. This gives them a chance to express their creativity and keeps their hands busy.

  • Play-Doh: A small container of Play-Doh can provide hours of entertainment! It’s great for sensory play and encourages creativity. Just be sure to set some ground rules (like using it on a blanket to avoid messes) and keep an eye on little hands, especially with younger siblings around.

  • Mini Magna-Tiles: These compact building toys are perfect for travel. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and offer endless opportunities for creativity. The kids love building structures together, which not only entertains them but also encourages teamwork.

  • The Manhattan Toy Company Winkel Rattle & Sensory Teether: One of the most significant advantages of the Winkel Rattle is its sensory design. The toy features a maze of soft, flexible tubes that are easy for tiny hands to grasp. These vibrant colors and textures provide visual stimulation and help develop fine motor skills. When traveling, keeping your baby engaged is crucial, and the Winkel does just that!

2. Create a Travel Kit

To keep everything organized, I create a travel kit for each child. Each kit includes:

  • A small backpack or tote with their name on it.

  • Their chosen entertainment items (iPad, crayons, Play-Doh, Mini Magna-Tiles, Winkel).

  • Snacks: Healthy options like granola bars, fruit pouches, or trail mix keep them energized without the sugar rush. Although, sometimes your two year old needs a lollipop to help keep him seated for the long plane ride.

  • A water bottle: Staying hydrated is essential, especially when you’re on the go!

3. Schedule Breaks

Whether you’re traveling by plane, train, or car, plan for regular breaks. Letting the kids stretch their legs, run around, and burn off some energy is crucial. Look for rest stops with playgrounds or grassy areas where they can play for a bit. This helps reduce restlessness and makes the journey more enjoyable for everyone.

4. Be Flexible and Patient

Traveling with little ones can be unpredictable, so flexibility is key. Things might not always go according to plan, and that’s okay! Allow for extra time at each stop and be prepared for changes in the itinerary. Patience is essential—take deep breaths and remind yourself that the journey is just as important as the destination.

5. Involve the Kids in Planning

Involving your children in the travel planning process can make them more excited about the trip. Let them pick a few activities or attractions they’d like to see, and explain what to expect at each stop. This helps build anticipation and gives them a sense of ownership over the journey.

6. Use a Travel-Friendly Schedule

Stick to a schedule that accommodates your kids’ routines, especially for naps and meals. If your little ones are accustomed to a specific nap time, try to build that into your travel plan. A well-timed nap can make all the difference in keeping everyone happy and refreshed.

7. Bring Comfort Items

For younger children, having a familiar comfort item can ease anxiety during travel. Whether it’s a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or pacifier for the baby, these items provide reassurance and make transitions smoother.

8. Capture the Memories

Don’t forget to document your adventures! Whether it’s through photos, videos, or a travel journal, capturing the memories is a wonderful way to reminisce about your family trips. You can even have the kids help by taking photos or jotting down their favorite moments.

Final Thoughts

Traveling with four little ones is undoubtedly a challenge, but with a little planning and creativity, it can also be incredibly rewarding. By keeping them entertained with iPads, crayons, Play-Doh, and Mini Magna-Tiles, staying organized, and being flexible, you can create fun and memorable family adventures. Embrace the chaos, enjoy the journey, and cherish the moments spent together!

Happy travels!
